TAMPA – An emotional Jacques Patrick scored his first TD as a pro and the Tampa Bay Vipers aren’t winless anymore with a 25-0 XFL victory over the DC Defenders Sunday night at Raymond James Stadium.

Patrick set the tone for the evening with an eight-yard TD run. Patrick finished with 108 yards on 21 carries.

“That was my first pro touchdown and I had to bury my dad last Friday, and it was just surreal you know. He was not here to see it,” said Patrick. ” My dad introduced me to the game, so it was real tough to see that and not know that he’s home to watch it but I know he’s watching from up top. I know he’s got a big smile on his face right now and I love him and it was just a real moment because I know he’s smiling.”

Tampa QB Taylor Cornelius threw a 17-yard scoring pass to DeAndre Goolsby and ran for a 17-yard score.

Cornelius was 24 of 31 passing for 211 yards. Running back De’Veon Smith ran for 122 yards on 24 carries.

Houston QB Cardale Jones was 9 of 22 for 71 yards and an interception. The Tampa Bay defense came up with three sacks on the night.

“Right now we haven’t missed a time, so we’ve come every time, but we’ll have to play where the ball position is. The players are doing a good job, they’ve made their checks. We’ve checked three times and checked right and they’re knocking them down,” said Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville.

Vipers kicker Andrew Franks was good from 40 and 26 yards. But missed a 31-yarder.

The Vipers (1-3) travel to LA Saturday to meet the Wildcats.
