XFL: Vipers Rack Up Yards, Not Points in 23-3 Loss to Guardians

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Andrew Franks recorded the first points in Vipers history when he connected on a 23-yard field goal. But that wasn’t enough as Tampa Bay fell to New York 23-3 in their XFL season debut.

Tampa Bay (0-1) finished with 394 yards of total offense, most for any team through three games this weekend.

“We knew, heading into the season that a big part of our offense was going to be the offensive line. We did a great job in running the football in this game,” said Vipers QB Aaron Murray.

Murray was 16 of 34 passing for 231 yards. Dan Williams hauled in six passes on nine targets for 123 yards. De’Veon Smith rushded for 79 yards.

New York led 17-0 at the half. The Guardians (1-0) defense caused three turnovers

Tampa Bay allowed just 45 yards rushing on 15 attempts from the Guardians.

Former Raiders backup QB Matt McGloin was 15 of 29 for 182 yards, with one passing and running touchdown for the Guardians. McGloin led his team to an opening drive touchdown, which came on his own sneak from the one.

Colby Pearson caught a 12-yard TD. New York’s Jamar Summers returned a fumble for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter

“I think they had a great start today. It was just some mistakes on my part and some other mistakes that we will clean up,” added Murray.

Tampa is on the road next weekend at Seattle.
