RUMBLE: UNF Takes Round One Over JU at Swisher, 75-68

JACKSONVILLE — Visiting North Florida came out a 75-68 winner over Jacksonville University in ASUN matchup at a packed Swisher Gymnasium.

Garrett Sams paced the Ospreys with 24 points. Carter Hendricksen added 17. Ivan Gandia-Rosa scored 13. Wajid Aminu had 11.

“At halftime we talked about not turning it over and getting shots. They stepped up to the plate and got the lead where it should be. We didn’t finish up as clean as we could have but I’m proud of our guys, couldn’t be more proud of our fight and couldn’t be more proud of what this means to us going forward,’ said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll

The Dolphins relied on David Bell for 21 points. Aamahne Santos added 16.

UNF improved to 11-9 and 4-1 in the ASUN. JU is now 8-11 and 1-3- in conference play.

The Ospreys went on a 12-1 run at the 12:29 mark of the second half that resulted on a nine point advantage to help seal the deal.

UNF scored 11 points off turnovers in the second half to help build a 70-56 lead with 6:13 to play.

The Ospreys led 31-29 at halftime.

Sams had 18 of his points in the opening 20 minutes.

Santos and Bell paced JU with eight points each in the first half.

The win marked the 200th victory for Driscoll in his career.

The two teams meet again Feb. 13 at UNF.

The ASUN slate continues for both schools. JU is home Saturday against Stetson. UNF hosts Liberty on Jan. 23.
