ASUN: Liberty Wins Fourth Straight, Defeats Jacksonville

Liberty won its fourth straight game with another defensive effort, defeating Jacksonville, 54-37, Saturday night at the Vines Center.

This is the second game where Liberty has held an ASUN opponent to under 40 points as the Dolphins scored a season-low 38 points.

David Bell had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Dolphins (8-10, 1-2). Diante Wood added 13 points.

Destin Barnes, whose 11 points per game entering the matchup led the Dolphins, was held scoreless.

Liberty jumped out to an early lead thanks to Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz scoring eight points in the first nine minutes of the game.

Midway through the first half Liberty went on a 13-0 run to take a 16-4 lead as the Dolphins struggled to score, shooting 19 percent (5-26) for the half. Liberty would outscore Jacksonville 12-6 inside the paint in the first half to take a 27-12 lead at the break.

Darius McGhee got hot at the beginning of the second half, scoring eight points in the first seven minutes of the second half to spark Liberty’s offense. Liberty would go on a 10-0 run to extend its lead to as large as 20 points (39-19) midway through the second half.

Liberty’s defense would continue to frustrate Jacksonville all night, limiting the Dolphins to shoot 36 percent in the second half.

Jacksonville plays North Florida at home on Thursday. Game time 7 p.m.

Plagued by costly turnovers, North Florida (10-9, 3-1 ASUN) suffered its first ASUN Conference and home loss of the season on Saturday night 78-66 against a hot-shooting NJIT squad.

UNF’s Wajid Aminu scored a season best 20 points to lead the Ospreys in the loss. Aminu also pulled down seven rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.

Ivan Gandia-Rosa and Garrett Sams joined Aminu in double figures, finishing with 11 points each. Sams paced the squad with 8 boards while Gandia-Rosa topped the team with six assists.

NJIT got a combined 58 points from San Antonio Brinson (37 pts) and Shyquan Gibbs (21 pts).

Highlanders shot 58.8% from the floor for the game.
