ARENA NOTEBOOK: Sharks Sign Wide Receiver Shonola, QB Fafaul

JACKSONVILLE – The 2019 National Arena League champion Jacksonville Sharks announced the signing of wide receiver and kick returner Prince Shonola and QB Mike Fafaul.

This will be his second year of arena football and first with the Sharks.

Prince Shonola (5’8”, 172) spent his rookie season with the Carolina Cobras during the 2019 season where he played wide receiver and kick returner.

In 2019, he played in four games, caught 3 passes for 45 yards and two touchdowns. On special teams, he returned six kicks for 123 yards and led the Cobras in average yards per return (20.5). Fafaul is entering his third season of arena football and second with Jacksonville.

Fafaul (6’2, 205) played in 13 games for the Sharks posting career-high stats, going 148-218 for 1,594 yards with 41 touchdowns.

Helping the Sharks become the #1 scoring offense in the NAL with 805 points in the regular season, averaging 57.5 points per game. Fafaul led the Sharks to a playoff victory and their second National Arena League title in three years.

Finishing the regular season as the starter and ranking #1 in the NAL for completion rating (67.1), passing efficiency (110.2) as well as yards per pass (7.1).

Before the Sharks, Fafaul spent his rookie year playing for the Albany Empire of the Arena Football League (AFL) backing up former Sharks All-Arena QB Tommy Grady.

Fafaul attended and played for UCLA in 2013, 2015, and 2016. During his college career, he totaled 1,670 yards on 141 attempts for 12 touchdowns. He also attended Fork Union Military Academy where he helped lead them to an 8-1 season in 2011.

Jacksonville also signed of defensive back Joe Blount. Blount enters his fourth season of arena football and first with the Jacksonville Sharks.

Joe Blount (5’11, 200) originally signed with the Maine Mammoths of the National Arena League, when the team suspended operations he landed a contract with the Bismark Bucks of the Indoor Football League (IFL) where he recorded 19 total tackles.

In 2018 he signed with the Sioux Falls Storm and recorded 27 total tackles. In 2017, Blount spent his rookie year as a defensive back for the Triangle Torch of the Supreme Indoor Football League (SIF).

He recorded 10 interceptions, 19 tackles, and two touchdowns during his time with the Torch.

Blount spent his college career at Central State University in Wilberforce, OH from 2012-2015. During his time at CSU, he recorded 73 tackles and five interceptions. He also was awarded First Team All-Conference in the SIAC.
