FSU’s Akers, Wilson Named ACC Players of the Week

TALLAHASSEE – Running back Cam Akers and defensive tackle Marvin Wilson were named Atlantic Coast Conference players of the week after their performances in Florida State’s 35-24 win over Louisville Saturday.

Akers won his second Running Back of the Week honor this season after rushing for 112 yards and a career-high three touchdowns.

The Clinton, Miss., native has three 100-yard rushing games this season, the most in the ACC. He also ranks in the top 10 nationally in rushing yards (4th, 499); touchdowns (4th, 8); total points (5th, 48); rushing touchdowns (6th, 6); points per game (7th, 12.0); and rushing yards per game (9th, 124.8).

He leads the ACC in each of those categories.

Akers was previously named the ACC’s top running back for his performance against ULM in Week 2 when he ran for 193 yards and had 248 all-purpose yards.

He has earned ACC Offensive Back/Running Back of the Week honors each of the past three seasons.

Wilson, from Houston, was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week with a career-high in tackles (10), tackles for loss (3.5) and sacks (2.0) against the Cardinals. He also recovered a fumble on the final play of the game to secure the victory.

Wilson led a defense that allowed just 124 rushing yards on 47 carries, less than half of the Cardinals ACC-leading 260 rushing yards per game entering the contest. Wilson had 3.5 of FSU’s 11 tackles for loss, FSU’s most this season.

Wilson is the first Power 5 player to record a fumble recovery, 10 tackles with 3.5 for loss and 2.0 sacks in a game since at least 2000.

Wilson’s 10 tackles were the most for an FSU defensive tackle since Timmy Jernigan also had 10 against Duke in the 2013 ACC Championship Game.

This is the first weekly honor of Wilson’s career.

Akers and Wilson will lead the Seminoles in another ACC contest this Saturday when NC State comes to Tallahassee (7:30 p.m., ACC Network).
