RECAP: Jaguars Drop NFL Opener to Chiefs; Sign QB Dobbs

JACKSONVILLE – Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns to Sammy Watkins as the Chiefs spoiled the Jaguars NFL home opener, 40-26.

Today Jacksonville has made move to replace injured QB Nick Foles.

The Jaguars traded their fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to the Pittsburgh Steelers for third-year QB Josh Dobbs.

Dobbs, 6-3, 216, was originally drafted by Pittsburgh in the fourth round (135th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He did not see action during his rookie season and played in five games in 2018. He completed 6 of 12 passes for 43 yards and added 11 rushing yards during last season’s campaign.

The Alpharetta, Ga. native attended Tennessee, where he finished his career with a 23-12 record and 3-0 mark in the postseason as a starting QB, tying for the fifth-most wins by a starting signal caller in program history.

He set school records for career rushing yards by a QB (2,160), career rushing TDs by a QB (32) and single-season rushing yards by a QB (831 in 2016).

Watkins had nine catches for 198 yards against the Jaguars on Sunday.

Behind backup QB Gardner Minshew II the Jacksonville (0-1) struggled on offense until a TD pass to Dede Wesbrook with 7:32 to play in the game. He hooked up with Chris Conley for 21 yards after the two-minute warning.

But the damage was done.

The Black and Teal defense couldn’t contain the KC running game, add to that a rash of defensive penalties in critical situations. Including the ejection of linebacker Myles Jack.

The Chiefs (1-0) pulled away late in the third quarter. Damien Williams’ one-yarder made it 30-13.

The Chiefs got four field goals from Harrison Butker. His final one, a 35-yarder, made is 40-19.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce caught three passes for 88 yards. Kansas City outgained the Jaguars, 491-428.

Jacksonville lost Foles to a shoulder injury. Foles sustained a broken left collarbone on the play when Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones landed on him after a pass.

Foles announced following the game that he will undergo surgery.

Foles had been 5 of 8 for 75 yards and a TD before he was injured. Foles led the Jaguars on a 70-yard drive. He threw a 35-yard pass to D.J. Chark cutting the Chiefs’ lead to 10-7.

Chark caught four passes for 146 yards.

Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill left the game with a shoulder injury.

The visitors struck on their opening drive. Mahomes threw a TD passs to Watkins. Good for 68 yards and an early 7-0 lead. The duo would hook up again twice.

The Jaguars’ Josh Lambo connected on field goals of 37 and 23 yards.

Minshew completed 22 of 25 passes for 275 yards.

Kansas City led 23-13 at the half.

GAME NOTES: Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette rushed for 66 yards on 14 carries….S Ronnie Harrison, CB Jalen Ramsey and S Jarrod Wilson tied for the team-lead with five tackles….the Chiefs scored on all their first half possessions….attendance was announced as 60,157…..CBS dropped local TV coverage and went to Tennessee-Cleveland with six minutes to play..crawler said they were having technical difficulties with the broadcast.
