GOLF: NFJGF Holds Annual Awards and JAGA News

JACKSONVILLE – The North Florida Junior Golf Foundation held its annual awards banquet last month at TPC Sawgrass. The players of the year in various divisions included (from left) Moses Campaan, Alyzabeth Morgan, William Mears, Ricky Ruth, Andrew Kunkle, Vanessa Parker (Apryl Parker’s mom) and Adam Vermut.

Timuquana Cup: The Timuquana Cup is Oct. 4-6 and a qualifier will be held Sept. 8.

JAGA Scholarship Event: The 17tth annual JAGA Scholarship Golf Classic will be Nov. 4 at Queen’s Harbour. The tournament is being moved this year due to construction work at the Ponte Vedra Ocean course. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start with an entry fee of $600 per team that includes an awards luncheon. Entries may be filed at jaxareagolf.org and chairman Adair Roberts asks that credit cards be used. No fees will be charged. Last year’s event raised a record of almost $25,000.

Banquet: The 7tth annual Celebration of Golf Banquet will be Feb. 5 at TPC Sawgrass. Details will be announced soon.

Ponte Vedra Ocean Renovation: The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club’s Ocean Course has closed for a renovation that will last until next August. A renovation to the greens will take place as well as some rerouting. The back nine will start with the present No. 11 and a par 3 will be added near the 13^th green. These changes will allow the driving range to be expanded. The course will play to a new par of 71.

• The PGA Tour’s RSM Classic is Nov. 18-24 at Sea Island and the event will have a concert on Nov. 23 featuring country music singer Cole Swindell.

• Ron Philo Jr. resigned as director of golf at Sawgrass to become the general manager of Victoria National in Indiana.

• The Northern Chapter’s Match Play Championship is down to finalists Hayes Farley of South Hampton and Aaron Russell of Sawgrass. Losing semifinalists were Life member Tim Peterson and Marsh Creek’s Cary Splane.

• Bob Wallace of Ponte Vedra was third in the North Florida Section Assistants Championship at Reunion.
