RECAP: Jacksonville’s Guzman Keeps Braves Hitless in 2-1 Win

JACKSONVILLE – The Jumbo Shrimp, in a fight for a Southern League playoff spot, helped their cause Friday night with a 2-1 win over Southern Division rival Mississippi before 8,104 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Bryson Brigman hit his second home run of the season to make it 1-0. His last HR, a two-run shot, came in April at Biloxi.

The Shrimp added to their lead in the fourth. Brian Miller walked to open the frame. He stole second. Brigman struck out. Miller took third when Anfernee Seymour walked. Miller scored on Justin Twine’s infield out to make it 2-0.

Righthander Jorge Guzman (6-10) recorded a no-hitter through six innings. He threw 99 pitches and struck out 13. Lefty Alex Visia came on in relief and gave up the Braves’ first hit, a single to C.J. Alexander with two out in the seventh.

Mississippi got on the scoreboard on Greyson Jenista’s home run of the season in the top of the ninth.

Leading 1-0 in the fourth Guzman ran into his only real trouble of the night. Ray-Patrick Didder walked on four pitches, then stole second. After Didder took third on a steal, Guzman hit Trey Harris.

Ryan Casteel struck out. Jenista drew a walk to load the bases with two out. But Alexander grounded out to first to end the visitor’s scoring threat.

The two clubs meet again Saturday 6:35 p.m. at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

GAME NOTES: Pinch-hitter Willie Contreras opened the Mississippi eighth with a double against reliever Alex Mateo..starter Phil Pfiefer (1-2) took the loss.
