GOLF: Batchelor Wins the 58th Jacksonville Amateur Championship

Former UNF player Jordan Batchelor of San Jose carded 68-69-71–208 (-8) at Sawgrass Country Club to win the 58th edition of the Jacksonville Amateur Championship last month by two strokes over Michael Smith of TPC Sawgrass.

Batchelor became the eighth Osprey to claim the event. Past champions from the school include Batchelor’s former teammates, Travis Trace (2014) and Andrew Alligood (2015), plus Steve Carter (2002), Michael Young (2003), Michael O’Neal (2007), Major Forbess (2010) and Sean Dale (2011).

Finishing third, six shots back, was former Ivy League champion Chris Condello from Winter Garden.

Batchelor has had a big summer starting with a runner-up finish in the Florida Amateur, then making this month’s U.S. Amateur as an alternate.

LOCAL GOLF NOTES: The 7th annual Celebration of Golf Banquet will be Feb. 4 at San Jose Country Club……The JAGA Executive Committee will meet this month and discussion of 2020 officers and 2019 award winners will be on the agenda….Moses Compaan of Bent Creek and Elizabeth Kondal of St. Johns G&CC won the boys and girls divisions in the Greater Jacksonville Junior Open at Eagle Harbor. It is the JAGA junior championship and is conducted by the North Florida Junior Golf Foundation…..The 17th annual JAGA Scholarship Golf Classic will be Nov. 4 at Queen’s Harbour. The tournament is being moved this year due to construction work at the Ponte Vedra Ocean course….former Jacksonville Amateur champ Sean Dale of Jacksonville G&CC won the Florida Open last month at Hammock Dunes. Some other Northeast Florida finishers: Jeff Dennis and Bubba Dickerson, tied for 7th; Dillon Woods and Devon Hopkins, tied for 14th; John Jonas, tied for 24th; and Toby Ragland, tied for 35th.
