JAGA NEWS: Sawgrass Country Club Supports Scholarship Trust

Sawgrass Country Club continues to top all JAGA member clubs in North Florida in the club’s support of the JAGA Scholarship Trust, which awards college scholarships to students with affiliations with JAGA clubs.

Sawgrass officials last month presented a check to JAGA for $12,925 from their membership. On hand for the presentation were (from left:) Sawgrass General Manager C.W. Cook, Sawgrass JAGA director and JAGA president Randy Nader, Sawgrass JAGA director Ray Gottschalk and Sawgrass Director of Golf Ron Philo.

Since 1974, JAGA has awarded approximately $1.8 million in scholarships to approximately 375 students. Currently, there are 25 students receiving benefits from JAGA.

Tournaments
• The 58th Jacksonville Amateur is July 25-27 at Sawgrass and a full field of 78 is expected. There will be a double tee start in the first two days, and then the field will be cut.
• Tori Mouton won the First Coast Women’s Amateur last month at Eagle Harbor. This is the JAGA women’s and senior women’s championship. She had 142, two better than Emily Felix. Leslie Smith was the Senior champ and Melissa Gotfredson won Super Senior.
• The JAGA Scholarship Trust tournament will be Nov. 4 at Queen’s Harbour. The entry fee is $150 per person and information is at jaxareagolf.org. Co-chairs are Adair Roberts of Ponte Vedra and Bob Streightiff of the host club. The tournament, which raised $23,000 last year, traditionally has been at Ponte Vedra Ocean but was moved this year due to the construction at the Ocean, which will close in August until next year. Nader’s Pest Raiders again will be the title sponsor.

JAGA Scholars
Two familiar names in this year’s class of JAGA scholars: Patrick Libby, son of Hidden Hills owner Russ Libby, and Cierra McKenzie, daughter of Timuquana outside operations director Billy McKenzie.  Others are Sara Schneider, Sawgrass; Todd Roy, Julington Creek; Christopher Ryan, Deerwood; Leslie Moore, San Jose; Samantha Maguire, St. Johns G&CC; John Fewell, Hyde Park; and Abigail Cobb, Jacksonville G&CC. The PGA apprentice scholarship was awarded to the TPC’s Nicole Keyser.

Nominating Committee
JAGA’s Nominating Committee has asked directors for suggestions for the 2020 slate of officers as well as honorees for the association’s annual awards. Awards are for best director, pro and club executive; a long-time service award and  the Community Service Award.

Gate events cancelled
The Gate Invitational and the Gate Senior will not be played this year as the Ponte Vedra Ocean course will close in August for renovation. The Invitational includes the area’s best pros and amateurs, and is played in August, and the Senior is an amateur event in December. The Ocean renovation is being handled by architect Bobby Weed and the construction is by MacCurrach Golf.

The First Tee’s fundraiser at the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse brought in a record $110,000. That was $27,000 more than last year … PGA pro Rhonda Ferguson is now teaching at the World Golf Village. She was operating the River Bend Golf Club in Green Cove Springs, which now has closed as the state will run the First Coast Expressway through that property … In a playday following last month’s JAGA Board meeting at Sawgrass, the winning team was comprised of Bill Hardaker, Timuquana; Jeff Adams, TPC Sawgrass; Ron Mullis, Palatka; and Adair Roberts, Ponte Vedra … It’s now expected that the new Sawgrass clubhouse will open in December 2020. At 65,000 square feet, it’s is second in size where only to the TPC’s 77,000 square feet … Captains for the 202 Underwood Cup are Richie Bryant of Pablo Creek for the pros and Andy Purnell of the TPC for the amateurs.
