JACKSONVILLE – The Jumbo Shrimp opened a five-game homestand Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville against the Mobile Bay Bears with a 2-1 loss.

Jacksonville starting pitcher Jorge Guzman, looking for his second win of the season against five losses, had a no hitter going into the seventh.

Catcher Jack Kruger broke it up with a single to center to open the inning.

He scored on Bo Way’s triple. The visitor’s tacked on another run when Way scored on Jhoan Urena’s RBI single down the first base line.

Jeff Kinley came in for Guzman and retired the side.

Holding a two run-lead Mobile starter Jeremy Beasley was lifted in the seventh for Adrian Almeida.

It looked like the Jumbo Shrimp might make some hay against the new pitcher. With one away Corey Bird singled.  He reached on a fielder’s choice then to third on John Silviano’s sky double.

But Almeida wasn’t rattled and struck out catcher Santiago Chavez to end any threat.

The next inning Jacksonville cut the lead in half.

Mobile reliever Joe Gatto gave up a sacrifice fly to Justin Twine, scoring Anfernee Seymour. Seymour led off the eighth with a single and went to third after Brian Miller’s grounder was flubbed by second basemen Jahmal Jones.

After two walks that loaded the bases with two outs, Mobile manager David Newhan went to Ryan Clark. Clark’s slider got Bryson Brigman to go down swinging.

The Jumbo Shrimp had several early scoring chances against Beasley.

Miller hit a one-out double in the first. He stole third. But was stranded after Beasley struck out Twine and Joe Dunand grounded out.

The fifth saw another good scoring chance for the Jumbo Shrimp. With one out Brigman drew a walk. He went to third on Silviano’s single to right.

But a great defensive play by Jones resulted in a double play.

Jones scooped up a ground ball by Chavez, tagged out Silviano on his way to second and threw to first to end the inning.

Game time Wednesday is 7:05 p.m.
