GAMEDAY: Miller’s Two RBI Night Propels Jumbo Shrimp Past Generals, 5-1

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (3-2) and Jackson Generals (2-2) played the final game of their Southern League season opening five game series Monday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

After two close games Jacksonville took the rubber match 5-1.

Righthander Cody Poteet started on the mound for the Jumbo Shrimp.

The top of the first saw the Generals go down in order.

Andy Young grounded out to shortstop Joe Dunand. Pavin Smith flied out to center fielder Brian Miller and Jamie Westbrook hit a sharp grounder to second baseman Bryson Brigman.

Generals starter Riley Smith gave up a double to Dunand in the bottom of the first. But the righthander settled down to strikeout Joe Silvano and Justin Twine to end the inning.

Smith’s trouble came in the second.

After a walk to catcher Santiago Chavez, Brigman sliced a double to right. Stone Garrett struck out. Anfernee Seymour’s infield hit scored Chavez from third before Smith got Poteet to ground out.

But Miller’s two RBI triple in the left field corner brought home Brigman and Seymour to make it 3-0. He later scored on a wild pitch.

Jacksonville tacked on another run in the fourth.

With one out Poteet reached on an error. Miller’s second hit of the night tailed into short left. Dunand’s double over the head of right fielder Marcus Wilson scored Poteet for a five-run lead.

The Generals’ Jamie Westbrook hit a solo home run off reliever Dylan Lee in the ninth.

The Jumbo Shrimp begin a five game road trip to Chattanooga beginning Wednesday.

GAME NOTES:¬†Brigman smacked his second double of the night, a two-bagger to left in the fifth….Jackson righthander Damien Magnifico came on in relief for Smith that same inning….Dunand was hit by a pitch in the fifth by the Generals’ third pitcher of the night, Lucas Lutege…Poteet left the game in the seventh after recording six strikeouts, two walks and allowing three hits….Dylan Lee came out of the bullpen for Jacksonville manager Kevn Randel.
