Jumbo Shrimp Open 2019 Season at Home Thursday

JACKSONVILLE — The 2019 Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp opens at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The Jumbo Shrimp will host the Jackson Generals, Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, for a five-game series from April 4 through Sunday, April 8.

The Miami Marlins announced the club’s Double-A affiliate in Jacksonville staffs for the 2019 season will be managed by Kevin Randel.

Randel will helm the Jumbo Shrimp after managing Jupiter the last two seasons.

He has coached in the Marlins’ system since 2010, after spending his entire playing career with the club (2002-’09). Bruce Walton (Pitching), Sean Berry (Hitting), and Jose Ceballos (Defensive) will join him on staff.

“This is a really good opportunity,” Randel said. “Getting back to Jacksonville is a good place from the past with a couple of championships for me there. We’ve got a great staff coming and I’m looking forward to working with all of our young players.”

Last season Randel led the Hammerheads to a winning season, as Jupiter went 70-64 overall and posted a 41-28 record in the first half of the season. Prior to managing the Grasshoppers from 2015-16, Randel spent three seasons as Jacksonville’s hitting coach from 2012-14, helping the club win the 2014 Southern League championship.

Randel also spent two seasons as the hitting coach for Single-A Greensboro from 2010-11. In his time in the Marlins system, Randel has coached major league hitters such as Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna, J.T. Realmuto, Austin Barnes, Derek Dietrich, and Jake Marisnick.

Opening Day is being presented by Firehouse Subs and Rimrock Devlin.

The Jumbo Shrimp will host a Street Carnival from 4 p.m. through 6:30 p.m. with a rock wall, game truck, face painter, vendors, DJ and stage and life-size games to help celebrate Opening Day.

Also among the pregame festivities is the Navy Band Southeast, which will play the National Anthem. During the Seventh Inning Stretch, Google Street View will take a panorama of the entire ballpark from the pitcher’s mound.

Following the game is the first of a Baseball Grounds-record 22 fireworks shows.
