ECHL: Mingo’s Shootout Goal Lifts Icemen to Second Place Tie in South Division

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Dajon Mingo’s goal in the fourth round of the overtime shootout lifted the Jacksonville Icemen to a 3-2 victory over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at the Jacksonville
Veterans Memorial Arena Friday night.

With the win, the Icemen (31-25-2-2, 66 pts) are nowtied for second place in the South Division with the Orlando Solar Bears (66 pts).

Following a tightly contested and scoreless opening period of play, the Icemen got on the board at 2:36 of the second period. Chris Lalancette threw the puck in front of the net and the
Greenville defense failed to clear the zone which led to a turnover in the low slot that was picked up by Jacksonville’s Cody Fowlie. Fowlie made a couple of deke moves just above the crease
and worked the puck around goaltender Garrett Bartus for the goal.

With just over two minutes remaining in the middle frame, the Icemen claimed a two-goal edge.

Following a fantastic save by Icemen goaltender Ken Appleby, the Icemen took off on a rush the other direction into the Greenville end. Kris Newbury fed the puck from the corner to a wide
open Garet Hunt in the slot. Hunt immediately one-timed the puck low on the ice past the outstretched leg of Bartus to give Jacksonville a 2-0 lead after two periods of play.

The Swamp Rabbits got on the board halfway through the third period. Thomas Ebbing knuckled a shot that was stopped by Appleby, but the rebound bounced to Brendan Harms.

Harms delivered a shot from a tough angle that skipped off the back of Appleby and banked into
the net for the goal to pull Greenville within one.

The goal by Harms broke up shutout sequence by Appleby of 139:07 that began back on Feb. 24.

Greenville tied the game with a 4-on-4 tally at 17:36 of the third, following a faceoff win in the offensive zone. Adam Larkin gathered the puck in the high slot and ripped a shot cleanly past

The extra session showcased several quality chances by both sides, but neither team could find the back of the net. In the shootout. Greenville’s Tyler Bird and Jacksonville’s Kris Newbury exchanged goals to send it to the fourth round. Dajon Mingo glided toward the net, made a  deke move to get Bartus to commit forward. Mingo slid around the outstretched netminder and lifted the shot high into the net for game-winner.

Appleby was stellar making 25 saves to earn the win, while Bartus takes the loss allowing three goals on 33 shots faced.
