ARENA: Sharks Sign Former Fletcher QB Medlock; Resign Ross

JACKSONVILLE — QB Jake Medlock has signed with the Sharks for his fifth season of professional football and third year of arena football. Medlock is the latest signee in what has been a busy off season for Jacksonville.

Medlock played QB for the Cedar Rapids Titans of the Indoor Football League.

Medlock led the league throwing 265 completions (1st) for 2,616 yards (1st) and 47 touchdowns (1st). Despite leading in every positive passing category he did not receive All-IFL honors.

Last season, Medlock also rushed for 168 yards and 12 touchdowns. Medlock signed with the Wichita Force (2017) of the Championship Indoor Football league, where he played 12 games and threw 2,052 yards, 43 touchdowns, seven interceptions, rushed for 191 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.

During the 2016 season, he spent time in training camp in the Canadian Football League where he competed for a roster spot with the Montreal Alouettes.

Medlock attended Florida International University where he played as quarterback and punter. He started in 22 games over three seasons throwing for 3,425 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He transferred to Valdosta State University where he played 13 games and threw 2,024 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. He rushed for 619 yards and seven touchdowns.

Medlock is a native of Jacksonville Beach where he played quarterback at Fletcher High School.

Defensive Back Marvin Ross signed for his seventh year of arena football, and his third season with the Sharks.

In 2018, Ross accumulated 49 total tackles (42 solo) (14 assists), nine interceptions returned for five yards, and 21 pass breakups for Jacksonville. In 2017, Ross played six regular seasons games with the Sharks before heading north to the Canadian Football League (CFL) where he played for the Calgary Stampeders.

In his six games in Jacksonville, Ross made 22 tackles, eight interceptions, and two pass breakups despite playing in only six games. On special teams that year, Ross also returned six kicks for 140 yards and one touchdown. In both of his seasons with Jacksonville Ross was named First Team All-NAL.

Ross is a native of Jacksonville and played high school football at Trinity Christian Academy.

Wide receiver Chris Gilchrist has re-signed with the Sharks for his second season of arena football.

Gilchrist was one of the Sharks top receivers in 2018 finishing second in most receiving categories during the season. Gilchrist played in 15 games for Sharks where he hauled in 59 catches (2nd), 706 yards (2nd) and scored 14 touchdowns (2nd).

Wide Receiver Ja’Juan Story also signed for his first year of arena football. Story started his college career at the University of Florida in 2011 and was a redshirt freshman. He then transferred to Texas Christian University (TCU) and played wide receiver from 2013-2015.

Offensive lineman Wilson Bell has also re-signed. He spent his first year of arena football with the Sharks where he started in three games on the Sharks offensive line.

He spent his college career at Florida State  where he played in 19 games. In 2013, Bell helped the team win the BCS National Championship and was named Florida State’s co-offensive scout team player of the year.

Defensive Lineman Damien Jacobs will enter his third season of arena football.

In 2018 with the Sharks, Jacobs played in 16 games and recorded 15.5 tackles, five sacks, two interceptions, one pass breakups, one forced fumble, four recovered fumbles, one blocked kick, and one safety.

Coming off his best season of arena football career Jacobs earned Second Team All-NAL Honors and the NAL Award for Most Improved Player.  In the 2017 season, he recorded 14 total tackles, four sacks, one interception, two fumbles recovered, and two safeties.

Other signings include offensive linemen Jabari Buckley and Fred Ruff.

Last season, Ruff played on a dominant offensive line with the Massachusetts Pirates, who finished the regular season as the number one seed with an 11-5 record.

The Pirates offensive line helped quarterback Sean Brackett win the 2018 NAL MVP award by throwing for 4,013 yards and 86 passing touchdowns. He also had one catch for eight yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Ruff helped lead the Pirates to rush for 336 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns. Ruff also earned 2018 Second Team All-NAL honors as an offensive lineman.
