FSU: Hank Lebioda Earns PGA TOUR Card

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State Men’s Golf Alum Hank Lebioda achieved a life-long dream late Sunday night, earning his PGA TOUR card for the 2018-19 season after grabbing the last of the first 25 membership cards given out via the Web.com Tour money list.

Lebioda’s prized moment came with great suspense, as the 25th and final spot came down to him and Kevin Dougherty at the WinCo Foods Portland Open presented by Kraft-Heinz. Lebioda finished six-under with a final-round 71, but a birdie chip on the 18th hole is all Dougherty needed to take the final spot. His chip just off the green narrowly missed, allowing Lebioda to punch his spot.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet. Absolutely nuts,” Lebioda said afterward. “It’s been a crazy year. It’s been an unbelievable year. It’s been a year full of growth, full of learning and hopefully I have more of that to come.”

The native of Orlando, Fla., had a fulfilling four-year career with the Seminoles from 2012-16, earning the captain role for his abilities on the course as well as his leadership qualities. Lebioda was both an ACC Player of the Year in 2016 and the league’s freshman of the year in 2013, while also being a two-time All-American and a four-year All-ACC member.

Lebioda left Florida State as the program’s all-time leader in par or better rounds (76), percentage of counting scores (93.4 percent) and birdies (467).

“I am not sure if this catches anyone by surprise or not but it shouldn’t when you’re talking about a former ACC Freshmen and Player of the Year,” FSU Head Coach Trey Jones said. “He approaches his development in a systematic learning way. His goal is to keep learning and growing. When you counter that with talent, strength and work ethic you’re going to be on the good side of most contests.

“Hank is a great person, Seminole and overall representative and I’m always proud of him. But seeing his face last night was special.”

Lebioda truly earned his way to the PGA TOUR, going through stints on the Mackenzie Tour in Canada in 2016 and 2017, the Latin America PGA TOUR in 2017 and the Web.com Tour in 2018. In 22 events played this year on the Web.com Tour, he earned four Top 10 finishes including a second-place showing at the Rex Hospital Open on June 3.

So far in his professional career, Lebioda has won one event. He took home the trophy at the Mackenzie Investments Open presented by Jaguar Laval on July 23, 2017, shooting 20-under at the Mackenzie Tour event.

Lebioda now joins three-time Major winner Brooks Koepka (2008-12), Daniel Berger (2011-13), Jonas Blixt (2004-08) and George McNeil (1994-98) as Florida State’s active members of the PGA TOUR. Hubert Green, Jeff Sluman and Paul Azinger are also FSU Alums who have won majors on the tour.

Following Lebioda’s accomplishment on Sunday night, he was straightforward when asked how much his college experience shaped who he is today.

“It changed me,” Lebioda said of his time at Florida State University. “Coach Jones took a chance on me as a kid. He did a really good job of developing me and growing me into a man that I’m proud of. It’s awesome. I owe him a lot.”
