GOLF: Lauren Waidner is the 2018 First Coast Amateur Champion

2018 First Coast Amateur champion Lauren Waidner.

Rising University of Florida sophomore Lauren Waidner of Fleming Island, FL defeated Hannah Berman of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and Chloe Schiavone of Jacksonville, FL with a birdie on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the First Coast Women’s Amateur today at Timuquana Country Club.

The Fleming High grad claimed the crown with a 15-footer on Timuquana’s first hole, with Berman and Schiavone missing from 10 feet and 16 feet, respectively. The trio matched pars on the first extra hole, No. 18.

Playing in the final grouping, Waidner (73), Berman (73) and Schiavone (74) finished the 36 holes of regulation play at even-par 144. Key to Waidner’s victory was an 18-foot par save on the par-3 16th after she came up short from a front bunker.

Schiavone, a rising Bolles School junior who has already committed to Notre Dame, surrendered the lead with bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17.

Berman, a junior to-be at Jacksonville University, clawed her way back into contention with birdies on Nos. 10 and 14.

Defending champion Ramya Meenakshisundaram was fifth, three shots back.
