BASEBALL: Jumbo Shrimp Fall to Generals in Opener 7-3

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (0-1) fell to the Jackson Generals (1-0) by a 7-3 score in the first game of a five-game series at The Ballpark at Jackson on Thursday night.

Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Cody Poteet (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts in his four and a third innings of work in his Double-A debut. Jackson left-handed starting pitcher Alex Young (1-0) earned the victory, pitching five innings where he allowed a run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Marlins No. 2 prospect Monte Harrison got Jacksonville off to a hot start in the top of the first with a leadoff triple. Two batters later, John Norwood brought him home with an RBI single that gave Jacksonville a 1-0 lead.

The Generals tied the game at 1-1 with Kevin Medrano’s solo homer in the bottom of the first inning. Jackson added an RBI triple by Galli Cribbs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead, then Cribbs collected an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to grow the lead to 3-1. An inning later, Marty Herum hit a two-run homer to left field to put the lead at 5-1, and he was the last batter Poteet faced in the game.

Jacksonville responded with a two-run top of the sixth inning. Austin Dean hit an RBI double that brought home Isan Diaz to make it 5-2, then Brian Schales collected a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Norwood to cut Jackson’s lead to 5-3.

Against Jacksonville left-handed reliever Jeff Kinley in the bottom of the seventh, a pinch-hit two-RBI double by Jackson’s Jose Vinicio grew the Generals lead to 7-3, which would be the final score.

Norwood and Dean provided the only multi-hit games for the Jumob Shrimp, combining for four of Jacksonville’s seven hits in the game. The game featured scoreless relief work from Jacksonville right-handed relievers Brandon Barker and Marcus Crescentini.

The Jumbo Shrimp and Generals will continue their series with the second game of the five-game set on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. eastern.

Right-handed pitcher Nick Neidert (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Jackson right-handed pitcher Taylor Widener (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
