JAGA: Senior Men’s Championship to be Held at Eagle Harbor

By Fred Seely and Barney Poston

JAGA hires Glynn
Kevin Glynn has been selected for the new position of JAGA’s Administrative Assistant. He has been the association’s treasurer but has resigned that position to take the part-time paid job.

Glynn, a PGA professional, will work under Executive Secretary Barney Poston of Hidden Hills and eventually will assume that title. He will oversee the association’s operational work including tournaments and meetings.

Billy Walker of Oak Bridge has been named Interim Treasurer by JAGA President Don Gilmore of The Golf Club of Amelia. The association is opening the position and anyone interested should contact Nominating Committee chair Fred Seely of Timuquana at fs4569@comcast.net.

“After a search period and evaluation of candidates, Kevin was clearly the best candidate for the position,” said Gilmore. “He has extensive experience with our local community and the golf industry.”

Glynn is a JAGA scholar and graduated from Jacksonville University.

Senior Men’s Championship
Entry information is at jaxareagolf.org for the 61st annual JAGA Senior. It will be at Eagle Harbor this year on April 16-18. The main division (ages 50-59) plays 54 holes while Super Senior (60-69) and Grand Senior (70+) play only the final two days.

The field is limited to 78 players. The Senior is sponsored by European Street Cafe. Information is at jaxareagolf.org.

Full field
The annual Spring Four-Ball on March 19 at Marsh Landing has filled three weeks in advance. There are 40 teams including 16 in the Scratch Division, including a number of pros and Underwood Cup players.

The 6th annual Celebration of Golf banquet on Feb. 28 drew a capacity of 200 guests to Shell Hall in the World Golf Hall of Fame. It was the third straight sellout.

Started by JAGA and now presented in conjunction with the Northern Chapter of the North Florida PGA, the evening’s feature was the presentation of the Deane Beman Award to recently retired First Tee CEO Joe Barrow.

Timuquana Cup qualifier
Local qualifying for the Timuquana Cup will be Sunday, March 25. There will be three places in the Mid-Am division and two in the Senior, and the qualifier fee is $150. The invitational tournament is May 4-6 and draws a national field.

Age requirements are 25 for Mid-Am and 55 for Senior as of May 4.

Practice rounds are available to qualifier entrants at $40, and can be played on weekends after 11. Information is at timuquanacup.com.

Amateur date change
The JAGA men’s championship has been moved from its originally announced dates of July 19-21 to July 20-22.

Thus, instead of playing Thursday through Saturday, the Championship will be Friday through Sunday. This change was made to avoid a conflict with the local U.S. Amateur qualifier at King & Bear on July 18-19.

Railing Cup
The annual Railing Cup match between head pros and assistants will be June 3-4 at Ponte Vedra.

The assistants’ teams has been named and includes Aaron Russell, Sawgrass; Will Rehberg, Deerwood; Copeland West, St. Johns G&CC; Chipper Hughes, Plantation; Hank Detlaff, Sawgrass; John Gryzbek, Plantation; Chris Jaster, Sawgrass; Bob Wallace, Ponte Vedra; Adam Eiswerth, Jacksonville G&CC; Baylor Comstock, TPC; Daniel Carraher, UNF; and Bud Delores, Marsh Creek.

New head pro
Jason Diaz has been hired as the new head pro at Atlantic Beach CC. He moves here from a club in Indiana.

Sawgrass clubhouse
Sawgrass members have overwhelmingly approved a new clubhouse. The present building is over 40 years old and has structural issues, and will be replaced by a modern facility which will be just to the west of the present site and overlooking the green on 9 East.

Family tournament
The entry file at jaxareagolf.org will open soon for the JAGA Family Tournament, to be played May 19 at the Slammer & Squire course at the World Golf Village. It’s hosted by former PGA Tour exec Duke Butler, wife Sheila, and siblings Duke 4th and Sadie.
