Bulldogs, Cardinals to Meet in TaxSlayer Bowl Dec. 30

David Long, Chairman of the TaxSlayer Bowl, announced today that Mississippi State University will play the University of Louisville in the Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl.

This marks the third all-time meeting between these two universities.

“We are very excited to welcome Mississippi State and Louisville to Jacksonville for the 73rd Annual TaxSlayer Bowl. It will be a great match-up and we are pleased to host these two top-notch teams and their players, coaches and fans in our city for a great day of football,” said David Long, Chairman of the TaxSlayer Bowl.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Mississippi State and Louisville join us at the TaxSlayer Bowl,” said Brian Rhodes, President and Chief Executive Officer, TaxSlayer. “They’ll be at the center of an unforgettable event with thousands of military members and veterans attending via the Honoring Our Heroes program. We can’t wait to pay tribute to our military heroes while enjoying what is sure to be a great game.”

The #23 Mississippi State Bulldogs finished this season with an 8-4 record and will serve as the Southeastern Conference representative and will be making their third appearance in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

“We are excited to accept a bid to the TaxSlayer Bowl and cap this season off the right way,” Director of Athletics John Cohen said. “I want to congratulate our team for a terrific season and earning the right to play one more. We get to do it in an NFL stadium. Our group of seniors is one victory away from tying the school record for wins by a senior class. We look forward to seeing our Bulldog family turn out in Jacksonville as we play in a Florida bowl for the fifth time in eight seasons.”

“This is a great opportunity for our team to go after its ninth win of the year,” said Greg Knox, who will serve as MSU’s head coach for the bowl game. “We are excited about playing an opponent the caliber of Louisville in the TaxSlayer Bowl. Our players are ready to get back to practice.”

The Louisville Cardinals, the Atlantic Coast Conference representative, finished their regular season with an overall record of 8-4. This match-up will mark the team’s 2nd appearance in the TaxSlayer Bowl, their last being in 2006 against Virginia Tech.

“Playing a bowl game in the state of Florida is a great reward for our players, staff and fans,” head coach Bobby Petrino said. “We have a large number of players from Florida so I know our players will be excited to make the trip. The TaxSlayer Bowl has a great tradition for being one of the best bowls, and I know our fans will be thrilled for another trip to the Sunshine State and playing an excellent Mississippi State team.”

“Accepting a bid to the TaxSlayer Bowl is a well-deserved honor and reward for our team and coaching staff,” interim Director of Athletics Vince Tyra said. “The team has won three-consecutive games and enters the postseason on a high note.

“The TaxSlayer Bowl has an outstanding tradition and our university is thrilled to be selected to this prestigious bowl. Our fans have always responded well in the postseason, especially games played in the state of Florida. I know our fans are excited for this opportunity and I fully expect them to be a major presence in Jacksonville.”

The 73rd Annual TaxSlayer Bowl will be played on Dec. 30, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla, and will be nationally televised on ESPN. Tickets and Bowl information are available online at www.taxslayerbowl.com.
