BLUEFIELD – The Bluefield College football team recorded its first shutout since 1941, blanking the Edward Waters College Tigers 19-0 in their home opener at Mitchell Stadium.

The shutout was Bluefield’s first since the program was re-instated for the 2012 season, and also marked the first home opening win and the earliest victory in a season since the revival.

The Rams got on the board midway through the first quarter after taking a EWC punt and driving deep into Tiger territory where Tanner Griffith booted a 32-yard field goal to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.

Defense then stepped to the fore for Bluefield when Shaun Kolb recovered an EWC fumble at the Tigers’ 32. Griffith made it 6-0 on a 21 yard field goal with 4:14 to play in the first quarter.

A scoreless second period sent the teams to the intermission with BC ahead 6-0.

Bluefield took the second half kick and drove 48 yards, the final three a touchdown run by Rashad Butler. Griffith’s extra point bounded off the left upright and the Rams lead moved to 12-0.

BC’s final score came seconds into the fourth quarter when Walter Harold passed 16 yards to Johnnie Myers for the TD. Griffith kicked the PAT to make it 19-0.

Edward Waters had their longest drive of the game in the final minute. The Tigers drove deep into Bluefield territory and had a first and goal at the five, but failed to score on three plays as time expired.

Alex Martin led BC in rushing with 98 yards on 12 carries, including a 35-yard jaunt late in the game. Butler carried 14 times for 54 yards and Harold added 43 on the ground. Harold completed 5-of-16 passes for 64 yards and a score, but was intercepted twice, including once in the end zone by Edward Waters.

Jeff Hughes caught two passes, while Kyle Cater, Myers and Butler each had a reception.
Key for the Rams in the game was the punting of Drake Presley. Presley punte eight times with an average of 40.9 yards per kick.

Defensively, Tyrice Henry led the Rams wil 11 tackles and one tackle-for-loss (TFL). Devon Jackson, who was Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division Player of the Week in week one, had 10 tackles including a pair of sacks and two TFL. Carlton Toussaint had nine tackles and Larry Jefferson eight.

EWC, utilizing three quarterbacks and an option offense, got 54 yards rushing from starting quarterback Tyler Mahla and 54 from fullback Daniel Wright. Mahla completed 8-of-15 passes for 73 yards and Christian Hayes completed 4-of-6 for 87 yards.

The Tigers won the possession game 26:58 to 20:11 and the first down battle 18-15. The Tigers had 422 yards of total offense, the Rams 279.
