FLAGLER: Baez Signs Free Agent Contact with Marlins Organization

JUPITER, Fla. – Former Flagler College catcher/first baseman Igor Baez signed a free agent contract last Wednesday with the Miami Marlins organization. Baez has been assigned to the Gulf Coast League Marlins, based in Jupiter.

“I am happy for Igor signing with a great organization like the Marlins,” said Flagler head baseball coach Dave Barnett. “They got a quality catcher and a leader. We certainly wish him well.”

Baez batted .297 for the Saints last spring and was fourth on the team in hits with 65. He hit eight doubles, one triple and was third on the team with seven home runs. Baez scored 27 runs and tied for the team lead with 41 runs batted in. He split time this past season between catching (29 starts) and playing first base (21 starts).

Baez finished his four-year career with a .300 batting average. He collected 169 hits with 31 doubles, two triples and 16 home runs. Baez knocked in 102 runs and scored 97 more. His 219 at bats in 2017 was the fifth highest amount in a season at Flagler and his 120 career singles ranks eighth all-time. Baez finished with a .987 career fielding percentage which is seventh-best in the program’s history.

Baez’ father, also named Igor, played a couple of seasons for the Cincinnati Reds organization.

Baez is the 47th Flagler player to continue his playing career in professional baseball.
