Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Fall to Blue Wahoos; Begin Homestand

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (24-31) fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (31-24) by an 11-6 score in the fifth and final game of the five-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on a rainy Saturday night.

The loss gives the Blue Wahoos a series win by taking three out of five games in Pensacola. The Jumbo Shrimp are now 0-6 in road series this season, and 0-4 in road rubber match contests. The Jumbo Shrimp committed a season-high seven errors in the loss, two shy of a league record for errors in a game.

Blue Wahoos relief pitcher Robert Stock (2-1) earned the win, while Jacksonville reliever Hunter Adkins (1-1) took the loss. Pensacola right-hander Alex Powers worked the final three innings to earn the save, his first of the season.

The Wahoos scored three runs in the first two innings off starter Chris Mazza. After trailing 3-0, Jacksonville tied the game in the top of the third on a three-run homer by John Norwood to put the score at 3-3. The Wahoos added a run in the bottom of the third to go back in front 4-3.

Jacksonville started the top of the fourth inning with a Yefri Perez triple, and he was brought home when Alex Yarbrough reached on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at four.

It remained a 4-4 tie until the Wahoos had a six-run bottom of the sixth inning. Aristides Aquino broke the tie with a two-run single to put the Wahoos in front 6-4.

Eric Jagielo added an RBI single, then Angelo Gumbs brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to put the lead at 8-4. Reliever Stock hit for himself, and added a two-run single to grow the lead at 10-4 to cap the six-run inning off Adkins and reliever Tyler Higgins.

Jacksonville struck for two runs in the top of the seventh, first with a bases loaded walk to Taylor Ard. Perez later added an RBI single to cut Pensacola’s lead to 10-6.

The Wahoos got out of the jam when Powers struck out Towey and Yarborugh to end the inning and strand the bases loaded. Pensacola scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh on a Gumbs RBI single to put the lead at 11-6, which would be the final.

Jacksonville starter Mazza had a no decision, allowing four unearned runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Pensacola starter Keury Mella also had a no decision, allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits with three walks and a strikeout.

The Jumbo Shrimp will bus through the night back to Jacksonville, and tomorrow will start a five-game home series with the Montgomery Biscuits, starting with Sunday’s 6:35 p.m. game at the Baseball Grounds.  Left-handed pitcher James Buckelew (0-3, 2.79 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Montgomery right-hander Greg Harris (2-4, 4.99 ERA).
