Jacksonville’s Bencomo Marlins MiLB Pitcher of the Month for April

KODAK, Tenn. – Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp right-handed pitcher Omar Bencomo has been named the Miami Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April.

Bencomo made five stats for the Jumbo Shrimp in April, going 4-0 with a 1.27 ERA. Over his 28 and one-third innings pitched, Bencomo held opponents to a .236 batting average, while striking out 33 batters compared to just five walks. The Jumbo Shrimp have also gone 4-1 in Bencomo’s starts, and he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any outing this season.

In the Southern League, Bencomo ranked first in the league in wins, third in strikeouts, and fifth in ERA for his work during the month of April.  Bencomo also has the fourth-highest strikeout per nine inning ratio among Southern League starting pitchers at 10.48.

Bencomo, 28, is a native of Valencia, Venezuela, and was signed by the Marlins as a minor league free agent on Feb. 8, 2017. Bencomo’s next start will be on Saturday May 6 against the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Stadium at 7 p.m.

Greensboro Grasshoppers outfielder Aaron Knapp was named the organization’s player of the month for April after he hit .296 in Single-A.
