PEARL, Miss.  – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (1-1) fell to the Mississippi Braves (1-1) by a 2-0 score in the second game of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Friday night.

Both of Mississippi’s runs came in the bottom of the first, as strong pitching from both clubs took over the rest of the night.

Mississippi starter Patrick Weigel (1-0) earned the win with five scoreless innings of work, where he allowed three hits, walked three batters, and struck out seven.

Jacksonville starter Matt Tomshaw (0-1) took the loss, giving up a pair of runs (both in the first inning) on seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts. M-Braves reliever Akeel Morris worked the final two innings in scoreless fashion to get the save.

All of the scoring came in the bottom of the first for Mississippi.

After Luis Valenzuela had a one-out triple, Travis Demeritte brought him home on an RBI single to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead. Demeritte later scored on an RBI double by Dylan Moore to put the score at 2-0, which would be the final.

Neither bullpen gave up runs, as Jacksonville saw lefties Jarlin Garcia and Victor Payano combine for three scoreless innings of relief work.

Valenzuela finished his night going 4-for-4 at the plate for the M-Braves, while David Vidal was the only Jumbo Shrimp with a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a double in the eighth inning. The Jumbo Shrimp left nine men on base in the game, and were 0-for-7 batting with runners in scoring position.

Tonight the Jumbo Shrimp will play game three of their five-game series against the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park at 7 p.m. ET.

Right-handed pitcher Omar Bencomo (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Mississippi left–hander Kolby Allard (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
