PLAYERS NOTEBOOK: Woods Only Player to Win The Players and Masters in Same Year

With a month remaining until the best field in golf tees it up at The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass from May 9-14, the tournament looks back at its historic list of champions, highlighted by Tiger Woods, who won both The Players and the Masters Tournament in the same year in 2001.

Fans onsite this year will once again be able to get free skin cancer screenings and sit in shaded bleachers courtesy of MD Anderson. More of the world’s top players have committed to the tournament, including winners of tournaments this season.

The extensive renovations to the Stadium Course include new tee boxes on the 7th and 15th holes, which should change how players approach each hole.

Woods the only player to win The Players and the Masters in the same year. With a list of champions that includes golf’s greats The Players is a place to witness history each May.

With the Masters underway, the winner on Sunday will have a chance to join Woods as the only player to win the Masters and The Players in the same year (2001).

Woods, who added a second win at The Players in 2013, captured the 2001 Masters to hold all four major championship trophies at once. A year earlier, he contended at the Stadium Course, but Hal Sutton held him off to win the tournament for the second time.

But a year later Woods would have his revenge. His hot streak did not end at Augusta, and he claimed his first win at The Players that included his legendary “Better Than Most” putt on the island-green 17th on Saturday.

Woods’ victory at The Players made him the first player to win the Masters and The Players in the same year.

Throughout the history of both tournaments, only seven players have been able to capture both during their careers: Woods, Raymond Floyd, Jack Nicklaus, Sandy Lyle, Fred Couples, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott. Whoever comes out on top at Augusta will have a chance to join this exclusive club at the Stadium Course next month.

FAN EXPERIENCE: MD Anderson to provide free skin cancer screenings, shaded bleachers on 16 and 17

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center will provide free skin cancer screenings for the public at The Players.
Skin screenings will take place Thursday through Sunday, May 11-14, in a private tent adjacent to MD Anderson’s Strike Through Cancer Wall and Baptist Health’s First Aid Station, near the Nicklaus Gate and across from The Grove. In 2016, more than 250 skin cancer screenings were provided to fans at The Players, courtesy of the two institutions. Appointments are not necessary and screenings take less than 10 minutes.

To promote sun safety at The Players, MD Anderson has provided free Supergoop! sunscreen SPF 50 around the course and shaded public seating on the No. 16 tee and No. 17 green.

Fans are encouraged to visit MD Anderson near The Grove, where they can leave messages of hope on the Strike Through Cancer Wall and collect UV protectant giveaways like sunglasses and SPF 30 lip balm.

With two locations, the Fan Bleachers presented by MD Anderson Cancer Center provide excellent shaded viewing for fans. Located on 16 tee, with views of 10 tee, the Fan Bleacher presented by MD Anderson Cancer Center offers a covered public bleacher and deck.

The Fan Bleacher presented by MD Anderson Cancer Center is a public bleacher behind No. 17 green that features a covered deck, misters to help fans stay cool and concessions. Concessions are available at each location.

THE COURSE: Tees moved on 7th and 15th holes

As part of the extensive renovations to the purest test in golf, The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, the tee boxes on the 7th and 15th holes have been moved, creating a strategic challenge for the best field in golf.

On the 7th hole, a 442-yard par 4, the tee box has been moved five yards to the right, changing the driving angle on a hole that will call on players to hit a fairway that is framed by a long bunker and water hazard to the left.

While the landing area hasn’t changed, an overhanging tree about 100 yards from the tee on the right is now much more in play, likely forcing more players to play a fade off the tee, rather than a draw.

This will bring more of the water hazard into play, which is now more visually intimidating with the grassy area between those two holes turned into a pond as part of the renovations.

The 15th hole, which played as a 449-yard par 4 in 2016, will now play about 20 yards longer thanks to a new tee box. The hole is a strong dogleg to the right and with its narrow chute of trees is one of the more difficult driving holes on the course. Precision will be key on a hole that will likely demand most players in the field to hit driver due to the added length.
