JAGA News and Notes

Trophies for the JAGA Match Play Championship/Michael Smith (left) and JAGA Amateur Championship/Philip Loeb (right) are proudly on display in the golf shop at TPC Sawgrass, home course for this year's winners.

Looks like Jacksonville Area Golf Association (JAGA) member clubs survived the storm in good shape. Haven’t heard of any club that won’t get back open by mid-week.

• Still plenty of room for the October 31 Scholarship Trust tournament at Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. This funds the Bill Black Scholarship, given in memory of the late JAGA executive secretary.

• From former JAGA President Larry Flynn, now living in Sarasota: In the late 70’s, the USGA went to Henry Tuten to have JAGA conduct the USGA Boys Qualifier. Henry, in turn, came to me.

I scheduled the 36-hole qualifier for San Jose and Beauclerc. (Note: Beauclerc was about a mile south of San Jose. The golf course is now a housing development and the clubhouse has been remodeled into the Jewish Community Alliance building.)

For the morning’s round I stationed myself at Beauclerc’s first tee. The first hole was 527 yards with a small brook tight against the front of the green. When this particular starting time was called, a tall, gawky, all-angles-and-elbows kid from Sea Island shambled up to the tee, hit his drive, and then hit a mid-iron on the green……two putts….birdie……..on to the next hole.

Beauclerc was my home course and I had never, ever seen a drive within 60 to 70 yards of where Davis Love III hit it. Needless to say, Love won the qualifier while Scott Dunlap pushed him hard and took second place.

• One of the benefits of JAGA membership is having access to a shared calender and a directory of member clubs. Directors are reminded that one of their responsibilities is to keep their club’s information updated on the website at jaxareagolf.org.
