SUNS: Winning Streak Ends with 9-4 Loss to Smokies

KODAK, Tenn. – The Jacksonville Suns (27-27, 57-67) fell to the Tennessee Smokies (21-32, 49-74) by a 9-4 score in the fourth game of the five-game series at Smokies Stadium on Saturday night.

Suns starter Matt Tracy (2-5) took the loss, allowing eight runs (three earned) on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout. Tennessee starter Brad Markey (7-7) earned his first win since June 27, pitching six innings where he allowed a run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Suns, who already have a series win against the Smokies by winning the first three games of the five-game set in Tennessee.

The Smokies scored eight runs in the first two innings off Tracy. After David Freitas reached on a fielding error by Suns second baseman Danny Muno, Jason Vosler collected an RBI single before Lane Adams hit a three-run homer to put Tennessee’s lead at 4-0. An inning later, the Smokies loaded the bases with two outs before Freitas hit a bases-clearing 3-run double to grow the lead to 7-0. Freitas would score when Muno committed his second error of the game on a groundball hit by Vosler to grow the lead to 8-0 in the second.

The Suns got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Kenny Wilson to put the score at 8-1. he Smokies scored off reliever Tyler Higgins in the bottom of the sixth on a Victor Caratini to get back to an eight-run lead at 9-1. Wilson drove in two more runs in the seventh with a two-RBI double that put the score at 9-3. Jacksonville’s last run scored in the eighth inning when Chris Curley hit an RBI double to put the score at 9-4, which would be the final.

Suns reliever Ryan Chaffee didn’t allow a run in the seventh or eighth in his first outing since returning from Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday.

The Suns will return to action in game five of the series on Sunday afternoon against the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Stadium at 5:05 p.m. The Suns will start left-hander Dillon Peters (2-0, 0.71 ERA) against Tennessee right-hander Zach Hedges (3-1, 1.50 ERA).

The Suns return home Monday, Aug. 22, for VyStar Credit Union Charity Begins at Home, which will include Launch-A-Ball to benefit City Year Jacksonville. For Bark in the Park, dogs get in free with a paying human companion. It is also a First Coast News Night and a Marlins Monday, when fans can enter to win tickets to see the Miami Marlins.
