SUNS: Jacksonville Falls to Birmingham, 9-8

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Jacksonville Suns (8-8, 38-48) fell to the Birmingham Barons (8-8, 37-49) by a 9-8 score in the first game of the five-game series at Regions Field on Saturday night.

Jacksonville starter Hunter Adkins (1-4) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts in his two and a third innings of work.

Barons starter Jordan Guerrero (5-4) earned the win with his seven innings where he gave up three runs on 10 hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Barons reliever Brain Clark picked up his second save of the year by getting the final out in the ninth.

Jacksonville opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single by Moises Sierra to give the Suns a 1-0 lead. Brian Anderson grew the lead to 3-0 in the second with a towering two-run homer over the left field walk.

The Barons responded with an eight-run bottom of the third inning. Eddy Alvarez tied the game at three with a two-run double, before RBI singles by Trey Michalczewski and Eudy Pina grew the Birmingham lead to 5-3. The Barons brought in the final three runs of the inning on three bases-loaded walks from reliever Tyler Bremer to put the score at 8-3.

After the Barons added a run in the eighth to lead 9-3, the Suns had a five-run uprising in the ninth inning. Cam Maron reached on a fielder’s choice to cut the lead to 9-4, although the play was the second out of the inning. Alex Glenn followed with a two-run double to put the score at 9-6, then Anderson came through with a two-run single to cut Birmingham’s lead to 9-8. Clark then retired the next batter Ronnie Mitchell on a groundout to second to end the game in a one run Barons victory.

The loss ends Jacksonville’s four-game winning streak, and J.T. Riddle continued his hitting streak to a Suns season-best 15 games with a 1-for-3 performance. The game was delayed at the start by two hours and 15 minutes due to rain in downtown Birmingham.

The Suns and Barons will continue the series with the second game of the five-game set at Regions Field on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. The Suns will start right-hander Patrick Johnson (4-4, 3.84 ERA) against Birmingham left-hander Blair Walters (2-3, 3.86 ERA).
