SUNS: Steckenrider Marlins MiLB Pitcher of Month for June

BILOXI, Miss. – Jacksonville Suns right-handed relief pitcher Drew Steckenrider has been named the Miami Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June 2016, announced by the Marlins on Wednesday.

Steckenrider in June in 10 games pitched had no wins or losses and a 2.19 ERA for the month. Over 12 innings pitched, he held opponents to a .077 batting average while striking out 17 batters and walking only three.

Overall for the Suns, Steckenrider has no wins or losses and a 1.96 ERA in his 18 relief appearances with three saves. In 23 innings he has 30 strikeouts with only eight walks, and batters are hitting .132 against him. Steckenrider started the year with the High-A Jupiter Hammerheads, where he had no wins or losses and a spotless ERA, not allowing any runs during 10 innings of work.

Steckenrider, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, was selected by the Marlins in the eighth round of the 2012 draft out of the University of Tennessee.

Steckenrider, 25, is the third Sun to earn a monthly honor from the Marlins this year, as infielder Brian Anderson was the Minor League Player of the Month for May, and Austin Brice was the Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April.

The Suns and Shuckers will continue their series on Wednesday with the third game of the five-game set at MGM Park at 8:10 p.m. ET. The Suns will start left-hander Matt Tracy (0-0, 4.50 ERA) against Biloxi left-hander Wei-Chung Wang (3-3, 3.75 ERA).
