All A-Sun Pair Not Enough for Dolphins against Mercer

EMERSON, Ga. – All-Atlantic Sun pair Cristina Finan and Mackenzie Swan swept their opponents in the first dual of the A-Sun tournament, but the stellar effort wasn’t quite enough to give the Dolphin beach volleyball team a victory over Mercer.

“I can’t complain about the effort our girls gave today,” said Head Coach Julie Darty. “There is some stuff we continue to struggle with, and when our weaknesses are exposed it’s hard to get of out the funk. Our ones did really well to start out but couldn’t close, the threes were awesome winning our lone point, and our fives had it but things didn’t fall our way in the third set.”

Finan/Swan played in the #3 spot, sweeping the Bears’ #3s 21-13, 21-19. The Dolphins’ #1 pair of Mayara Prestes/Kelly Koop won its first set 21-18, but then dropped the second set 15-21 and the third 9-15. The #5 pair of Ana Gabriella Nieto-Gomez/Hanna McMahon lost their first set 21-23, rebounded to take the second set 21-13, and then ran out of gas in the final set 9-15. The #2 pair of Emily Laskelle/Katie Krawczyk lost 9-21, 14-21, and the #4 pair of Olga Nushtayeva/Shelby Babowicz lost 10-21, 13-21.

“The good news is that we’ve got another chance to stay alive tomorrow,” continued Darty. “We’ll scout the afternoon matches today and be prepared for our dual against the winner of Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida tomorrow afternoon.”

The Dolphins will face either North Florida or Florida Gulf Coast at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
